The ride on the horses from the main day lodge at TheWoodShedAZ!™, to this dynamic horse back riding adventure park (Ponderosa Pine Forest covered volcanic Cinder Basins and broad expansive horse back ranch and range country), is nothing short of ‘Outrageously SouthWestern USA Outback! “American Serenghetti-high alpine desert” style! The exciting, fun filled trips to both the upper Ponderosa Pine covered ridgelines and across vast expansive ranges of high alpine desert lands, starts with a sun soaked view filled, bountiful breakfast at TheWoodShedAZ!™ Timber-lodge; once departed on your horse, it takes about twenty five minutes to arrive at the top of the Ponderosa Pine studded alpine ridge lines that are the gateway into the alpine pine forests and volcanic Cinder basins. Other legs of the trip are planned as you view the many aspects of the entire territory from the highest of ridgelines in the splendor and sancturary of the pristine high desert mountain pine forrests. |
As the multi-territorial journey of this trip unfolds from the main lodge, the high ridge lines afford riders non-stop views (North, South, East and West), that extend for as far as the eye can see. Vast stretches of silent, prime Ponderosa Pine forest land and the pleasant, dry alpine atmosphere of this unique volcanic high alpine desert area make this trip, adventurously fun and marvelously exhilarating. |

The horse back riding area of choice for this location is a gigantic and beautiful series of pristine Ponderosa Pine forest covered Cinder Basins that were formed from the stratospheric eruption which created the San Francisco Peaks. This Safari-adventure, also offers dramatic changes in altitude and scenery from vast panoramic views of the Painted Desert to a tour through the high Juniper, vast stretches of beautiful high desert range lands and into Ponderosa Pine forests of the Coconino National Forrest, where a handful of rugged Cowboy type ranchers and individualists call home. So, into this separate reality you go, into the volcanic Cinder Basins where Wild West horseback riding is as good as it can get, anywhere in the world. Other legs of this adventure voyage, include fantastic Northern, Southern, Easterly and Westerly approaches to the one-of-a-kind WoodShedAZ!™ Timber-lodge. |
On the first major leg, horseback riders, travel the high ridgelines of the Volcano Fields, arriving directly near the beautiful Sunset Crater area, where base camping is good under license for up to fourteen days. Wild life of all kinds is abundant. Off the beaten paths, when not riding the horses, explorative hiking activity further rewards those who venture forth perhaps into more extreme territory or viewing platforms not able to be accessed by a horse. The opportunity to see an abundance of Mountain White Tailed Deer, majestic Grand Mountain Elk, Large Birds of Prey (Eagles, Red Tailed Desert Hawks, large Ravens and Crows), Jack Rabbits. |

There are many species of desert animals to view and enjoy. In the upper regions of this area, a unique, mostly unknown mystery-world exists high and above the rest of the area. Due East of what was the immediate blast zone from the stratospheric eruption that occurred here 900 years ago, there is pure high altitude Pine desert silence. This blast zone formed these dynamic Volcano Fields and the Cinder Basins that make up this incredibly beautiful and fun area to explore. It is great! |
With the city of Flagstaff between the ATV Park and San Francisco Peaks, horseback riders may also ride into the expansive black lava sand mountains in the Volcanic Cinder Basins that make up part of the ATV Park away from the ATV’s to see this unique area. Taking a break from the horses, guests may visit Sunset Crater National Park, while enjoying quick valet-style access to local supply stations, saloon and general store or ten minutes down the road to the City of Flagstaff’s amenities and diverse culture. |
