The Paradox of the Grand Canyon is this; One of the great pleasures, the great joys of the Grand Canyon is that a person can step to the forests’ edge anywhere at an over-look of this great Canyon and seemingly see it all, the temples, buttes, inner gorge, river, rock strata – all exhibited in extraordinarily exquisite three-dimension. But, it is also true that from the Rim, you see nothing. Below the Rim, another world is at large and unfolds into infinity. At the bottom of this world, standing at the Colorado River, the rim worlds are as remote as another continent.
At the Rim, a person is just a detached observer; by the river, a person becomes a participant. All the photographs in the world, of this Grand Canyon do not depict or begin to describe its Power and Coherence. This can only be recorded in the human mind and the only way to achieve this recording, as a human, is by descending into the Grand Canyon’s trails, shooting the rapids of the Colorado River and sitting in some rock chamber carved by the river, hundreds of millions of years ago.
